Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Espy, PA. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have centers throughout all U.S. cities, prepared to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, typically from the head, but body hair may be acceptable. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can include other tailored hair testing services.

More frequently in recent times, drug testing methods have incorporated hair follicle testing. Whether for businesses, legal requirements, or substance abuse assessments, hair tests have replaced standard urine tests. They are preferred for their extensive detection time, reaching up to 90 days, along with the integrity of the observed collection process, making them highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests still hold accuracy for reviewing recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fiber. When harvested near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" solely refers to scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of inputting a sample into the lab's system. This step entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any necessary data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair analysis as the most challenging testing method.

Confirmation for any positive screen uses techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with hair drug tests is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy in the results.
  • Captures use history: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
