Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Exeter, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing facilities available in all cities across the country to carry out a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair testing over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict drug policies and individuals on probation. The main benefit is its longer drug detection timeline, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the consumption of substances such as drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows, hair provides a prolonged history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use dating back up to around three months. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

Collecting a hair sample of 1.5 inches made up of approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, it's recommended to have 150mg of the sample. Employ a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Specifically, scalp hair refers to head hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory drug test analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's initial integration into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fills in any information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples highlighted as positive through Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples marked as positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair analysis is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive result utilizes techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are meticulously cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Detects drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection scope of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in circumventing hair tests contributes to their reliability.
  • Historical consumption insight: Provides a record of drug use over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Exeter, PA

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
