In Eyers Grove, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in both drug and alcohol assessments, we offer our expertise in hair analysis through our nationwide centers. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body for testing. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored examinations.

Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. This shift is due to the hair test's cost-efficiency and superior detection period, spanning up to 90 days, thereby offering a more comprehensive drug-use history. It is essential for zero-tolerance policy enforcement, though for drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be collected. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. Steps include verifying that samples are sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. All samples that are presumptively positive during Screening demand an additional confirmation.

If the Screening stage indicates presumptive positivity, further hair is removed from the primary sample for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the methodology with the utmost complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The chain from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-lasting detection: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike the shorter spans of urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrence: Its resistance to cheating enhances result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It unveils a drug use pattern over time, rather than isolated recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drug presence in hair surfaces approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration variations can occur, based on factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
