Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairdale, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair analysis ensures accuracy. With testing facilities located in cities across the nation, we can conduct hair tests effectively. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Various analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing are available.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of conducting drug tests. Employers, courts, and professionals addressing substance abuse are increasingly opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from this method. A primary advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct observation and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strand captures biomarkers within its fibers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and substance use. When clipped near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal volume of body hair can be gathered. When we refer to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, involves assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. Therefore, samples that show a potential positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples indicating a potential positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive result from screening is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with potential positive results are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days earlier, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely difficult, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It offers a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption instances.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in strands.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in Fairdale, PA, by demonstrating superior accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests are limited in their detection window, hair testing provides a much longer period of evidence, making it harder to circumvent and more trustworthy for employers and institutions. Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Fairdale, PA, offers a vital advantage in understanding one's substance history. With the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, employers gain a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's past behavior. This long-term insight is crucial to making informed decisions regarding workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
