Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Fallston, PA. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, they have centers nationwide for easy access. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for these tests. Hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent, replacing urine tests in many areas. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers, its primary advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. Hair collection is observed and leaves little room for tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For extended tests such as EtG or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, you can use an equivalent quantity of body hair. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first entered into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed correctly during shipping, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is allocated, and any supplementary data entry needed beyond the electronic chain of custody is completed.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Thus, any samples that test positively at this stage require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. This stage involves removing drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer shorter windows.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating on hair drug tests is extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Pattern analysis: Hair tests indicate a timeline of drug usage over an extended timeframe, rather than just recent events.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not beneath the scalp where the follicle is located.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fallston, PA, hair follicle testing provides several advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair testing boasts a higher detection accuracy, capturing drug use patterns over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, hair samples cannot be easily adulterated, which enhances reliability. For ongoing sobriety monitoring, hair tests offer a more comprehensive overview than urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

One major advantage of hair follicle testing in Fallston, PA, is its extended detection window. This method reveals drug use for up to 90 days, offering a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. Employers benefit from this longer assessment period, enabling them to make informed decisions based on consistent behavioral patterns rather than short-term abstinence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Fallston, PA, are known for their tamper-resistant qualities. As the test requires an unaltered hair sample, the chances of adulteration are significantly minimized. This imbues confidence in the test outcomes, assuring employers and legal entities of genuine and indisputable results. Such security measures are vital for organizations prioritizing integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
