In Fannettsburg, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests may detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other custom options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and for probation conditions due to their extensive detection period—up to 90 days in a monitored process—making tampering nearly impossible, whereas urine tests are more precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant tool for spotting drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, slightly challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, involving about 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the favorable sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be obtained. When indicating head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis for a drug test output are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data beyond what an electronic chain of custody system offers.

Screening consists of an initial brief check for drug misuse. While Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is removed from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite tricky, making the results more credible.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display usage trends over a span of time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other testing modes.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While typically termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Fannettsburg, PA, offers a clear edge over urine tests regarding detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a comprehensive analysis over an extended timeframe. This method significantly enhances reliability, ensuring drug use is monitored over time rather than a short-term period, delivering precision that supports health and safety policies effectively.

  • Superior Detection: Tracks substance use over months, not days.
  • Unmatched Accuracy: Reduces false results compared to urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Fannettsburg, PA, are finding hair follicle testing crucial due to its extended detection window, providing up to 90 days of substance use history. This extensive timeframe helps employers piece together a holistic understanding of an individual’s habits, extending far beyond the capabilities of traditional testing. Long-Term Monitoring: captures a broad picture of substance usage.

  • Comprehensive Reviews: Reveals patterns over months.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
