Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Faxon, Pennsylvania. Are you in need of a hair or alcohol drug evaluation? At Accredited Drug Testing, hair analysis is our specialty, with testing facilities available in every city across the nation to conduct your exam. For testing, you should possess 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp; alternatively, body hair is an option. This method can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet other requirements.

Recently, drug testing strategies have increasingly adopted the hair follicle approach. Numerous companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer this test over traditional urine screening. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers rely on hair follicle drug tests. They offer the benefit of detecting substance usage over an extended period—typically up to 90 days—are collected securely, and are virtually immune to deception. Still, for recent drug intake within a five-day window, urine tests remain unmatched for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and drug ingestion by securing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide about a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 components, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. It ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a more challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are subjected to washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests, which have shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to tamper with: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a pattern of drug use across time rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
