Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle testing services are provided in Ferndale, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we're your experts, active nationwide across all cities. Possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally sufficient for testing. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity in drug testing methods. It's being preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers opt for hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and low risk of manipulation. However, urine tests remain precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers, hair offers an extended history of substance use. When procured close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for producing a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a laboratory system initially. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal proceedings. Samples that test provisional positive in Screening demand a confirmatory review.

For any sample tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the hardest technique to conduct.

The verification of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory path from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers trend data: It can display a pattern of substance use over a longer timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required before drugs become observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
