Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Floradale, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, offering services in all cities throughout the country where hair tests can be conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for substance screening over urine tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair drug tests over urine-based tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation frequently utilize hair tests. A vital advantage is the extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation and virtually impossible to falsify. Yet, for drug usage detection within five days, urine testing remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term histories of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and including about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.) is categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The essential laboratory steps to process a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing within a lab's system. This stage includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, it is crucial to confirm a positive screen for legal admissibility. All samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex testing method.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: They deliver a trajectory of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the underlying hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
