Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle drug testing services in Force, Pennsylvania. Whether it's a drug or alcohol hair test you're in need of, their expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across all U.S. cities for such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of either head or body hair is required. These tests can screen for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach for detecting drug use. Employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Individuals on probation or under businesses with no drug-use tolerance policies are often required to take hair tests. The key advantage is the extended detection duration, spanning up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, making it very hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests still hold the upper hand in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a three-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or any assessments exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial treatment of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves verifying that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumed positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be suspected as positive during the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate results: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Considerations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
