In Forest City, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers available in cities nationwide. Generally, hair from the crown of the head, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, is used for testing, but body hair can also be utilized. Hair testing options include detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom analysis.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening procedures. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by organizations with strict drug policies and judicial systems overseeing probation. This approach's main advantage is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days and offering an observed, nearly tamper-proof collection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a substantial history of alcohol and drugs' presence. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, making it somewhat resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, it's recommended to have 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result in a laboratory comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage performs a preliminary rapid assessment to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is essential for court acceptability. Presumed positive samples in Screening must be confirmed further.

If a sample presents as presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for the stage of Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), underscoring why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Positive screenings require Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to deceive: Overcoming a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical information: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expenditure: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Forest City, PA

In Forest City, PA, hair testing offers a significant advantage over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. Hair follicle testing detects drug use over a prolonged period, providing clearer insights into an individual's substance use history. In contrast, urine tests have a much shorter detection window, limiting the scope of historical analysis.

Benefits of Hair Testing
Aside from the longer detection period, hair testing is less susceptible to tampering, ensuring more reliable outcomes. This method is favored by employers and legal entities seeking robust, long-term drug use insights. Ultimately, hair testing provides a more comprehensive evaluation of a subject's history, enhancing decision-making processes.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
