Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fountain Springs, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown, or body hair, can be used. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been adopted for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation services. The significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drugs, usually up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, which minimizes the chance of tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It offers an extended tracking history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of expanding hair strands. Collected near the scalp, hair covers a detection timeframe of around three months for substances. Collection is straightforward, opening up possibilities for tampering is challenging, and it is conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil’s diameter) near the scalp delivers 100mg, which is ideal for initial and confirmatory screening. For EtG, additional assessments, or checks beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Alternately, if scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be acquired. Notably, head hair implies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial laboratory phases in drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and transport, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial brief examination for controlled substances. While Screening is economically viable for excluding drug usage in most samples, additional confirmation is needed for legal relevancy regarding positive results. Presumptively positive samples during Screening thus require secondary verification.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, bile drugs are extracted from hair at far lower levels than those found in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed to validate any positive screening findings. Positively presumptive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can indicate drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The difficulty in circumventing a hair drug test heightens result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It depicts substance use trends over time, beyond merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Substances take about 5-7 days to show in hair samples.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Hair color and individual growth rate variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" often used is misleading, as the test examines the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
