Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive services for hair follicle drug assessments in Freedom, Pennsylvania. Should you require such testing, our expertise in hair analysis spans across numerous centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is essential for testing, applicable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle testing is gaining traction as a preferred drug testing method over conventional urine tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring this approach. It plays a crucial role for employers with strict policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection ability over 90 days, and observed collection process which minimizes tampering chances. Yet, for drug usage within a mere 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within its growing fibers, providing a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When sample hair is gathered near the scalp, it gives a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to mail.

To conduct a proper screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp ensures a collection of 100mg of hair, which is optimal. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable measure of body hair can be used. When we specify head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the laboratory includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of handling a sample in a lab system. This phase includes confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry needed outside an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although it is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive findings must undergo Confirmation to be court-acceptable. Samples showing a positive preliminary result during Screening require further verification.

In instances where Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Final confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminarily positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: Offers a consumption pattern over time, not merely immediate usage.

Challenges:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
