Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle tests in Gold, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers in cities across the U.S. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from either the head or body is required for analysis. Tests examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained favor in drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair analysis over conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and those on probation utilize these tests. Their appeal lies in an extended detection window of as much as 90 days, observable collection, and resistance to tampering, though urine tests remain more precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity required for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. Mention of head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory execution of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step includes confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples tentatively positive during Screening necessitate supplementary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary specimen for the Extraction phase. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably diminished concentration compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presuming positivity are pre-washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug presence for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a more constrained detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, therefore enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: This test can reveal a trend in drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more than other forms of drug tests.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation inspects the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
