Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gradyville, Pennsylvania. If you need drug or alcohol analysis through hair testing, our expertise ensures quality, with centers offering these tests in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug screenings. More employers, courts, and substance professionals now prefer this over standard urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation often use hair tests, benefiting from the 90-day drug use detection window. Though urine tests remain best for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When the sample is collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline extending to around three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send for analysis.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair—perfect for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test processing involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the sample's initial integration into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a fast initial check for drug presence. While a cost-efficient method to exclude drugs in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening requires verification for court validity. Any initially presumed positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, extra hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through processes such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation standards according to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter period for urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the strand of hair rather than the scalp-protected hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
