Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services in Grazierville, PA. If you're in need of a hair-related drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analyses and have centers across all cities in the nation capable of conducting these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair is usually required, although body hair is also acceptable. Hair analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis rather than the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair tests. The chief advantage is a much lengthier detection window of up to 90 days, with the collection process being observed and almost impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion composed of around 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s database. This step ensures the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening denotes an initial rapid examination for drug usage. While Screening offers an economical way to exclude drug usage in the majority of specimens, any positive Screen result requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Any specimens that are suspect positive in Screening do necessitate additional verification.

If a specimen is a suspect positive during the Screening moment, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are derived from hair at a lower density than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All dubious positive specimens are cleansed before verification as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection interval.
  • Challenging to deceptive: It is extremely hard to fake a hair drug analysis, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become ascertainable in hair.
  • Expensiveness: Hair drug analysis generally costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair root beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
