Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Greens Landing, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers nationwide, including every city, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. Our hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

More frequently in recent years, drug testing methods have incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. Their major advantage is a longer detection window, extending up to 90 days, observed during collection, and nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands archive a long-term history of substance use by integrating biomarkers within their fibers. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair testing offers a detection window of roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment from around 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the sample. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s apparatus. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any necessary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening costs less and can exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples suggestive of positivity in Screening require confirmatory testing.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each sample indicated as presumptively positive undergoes washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, which results in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides usage trends over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs typically show up in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Individual differences such as hair color and growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Greens Landing, PA, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in multiple ways. Its detection period is far superior, highlighting drug use across a more extended timeline, which enhances reliability in results.

Furthermore, hair testing's resistance to tampering makes it more trustworthy, offering a comprehensive approach that urine tests cannot match, especially when accuracy is paramount.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
