Accredited Drug Testing provides reliable hair follicle drug tests in Greenwood, Pennsylvania. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis and offer testing sites across the country. Typically, hair samples from the head or body, with a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches, are collected. These tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer this over urine tests. This approach supports zero-tolerance policies for drug use, as employed by some employers, legal courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and the secure nature of their collection process makes them hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now viewed as an effective method for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month timeline for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In instances where scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to stand in court. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are initially positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s extremely challenging to fool a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Offers a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
