Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Grier City, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available across all major cities Nationwide qualified to conduct these tests. Generally, you'll need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown or from the body. Hair samples can be checked for drug residues, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing methods.

The trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has significantly grown over the years. This method is preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts, often replacing traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation protocols heavily rely on hair follicle drug tests. They boast a longer detection span of about 90 days, are collected under direct supervision, and are extremely hard to manipulate. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical account of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer as much as a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample of about 1.5 inches in length, containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, more comprehensive tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent weight of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair in context, whereas body hair signifies other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for courtroom eligibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

If a Screening stage sample yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Cheat-resistant: Dodging a hair drug test is particularly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can highlight a drug use pattern over time, instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the tests examine the hair strands rather than the scalp hair follicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
