Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Guthriesville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with testing centers located Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. These tests are now preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are reliable for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The key benefit is a long drug detection period, up to 90 days, with observed collection and nearly impossible to falsify. Urine tests are better for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as a key tool for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extensive history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Its collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirming results. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest weighing hair samples using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in lab processing of a drug test report are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the processing of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides the initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate cases of drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court acceptability. Presumptively positive samples identified during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, yielding more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a timeline of drug use, revealing patterns over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
