Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Hammersley Fork, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers across all cities nationwide. For most tests, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for drug testing over traditional urine tests. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection period, usually up to 90 days. The collection is observed, making cheating nearly impossible. For testing recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug exposure. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis. For EtG additions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of logging a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter period of detection.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, thereby ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insights: It reflects a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hammersley Fork, PA, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior detection range and accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
