Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harmonsburg, Pennsylvania. Whether you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is available at testing centers across all U.S. cities, ready to perform the necessary tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests may indicate presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle methods. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over typical urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationers prefer hair follicle testing. Its main advantage lies in an extended detection timeframe for drug use, potentially up to 90 days, and is conducted under observed conditions, making it nearly fraud-proof. For drug usage within the past five days, however, urine testing remains the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term archival mechanism for alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to acquire, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG inclusions and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s operations. This process includes checking if the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any necessary data entry not directly supplied by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening consists of an initial cursory check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screening requires validation to be legally acceptable. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the existing sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to find recent usage: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug remnants in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Harmonsburg, PA? The answer lies in its undeniable benefits, including superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
