In Harmony Township, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests and offers them at centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, which can come from the head or body. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in recent times. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over regular urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers use hair follicle tests. These tests offer a longer detection period for substance use, typically reaching up to 90 days, are supervised during collection, and are difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests are still more precise for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands can encapsulate biomarkers of alcohol and drugs within the growing fibers, offering a historical record. Sampling hair from near the scalp can yield a detection period of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and facilitates convenient transportation.

A 1.5-inch sample containing about 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides roughly 100mg, suitable for thorough screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or over 10-panel testing, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, collecting an equivalent amount of body hair is advisable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in processing drug test results in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introduction of a sample into a laboratory system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry missing from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drug presence. Although Screening offers a cost-effective assessment for most samples, positive findings need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening require further verification.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), posing a challenge in hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, receives evaluation under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Reduced likelihood of falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It provides insights into drug usage trends over extended periods rather than immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Exclusion of recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing bears higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
