Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening solutions in Haverford, PA. For individuals requiring hair or alcohol testing, we offer specialized services in hair analysis with nationwide testing facilities ready to conduct hair screenings. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas are necessary. Hair tests can assess for substances, alcohol/ETG, or fulfill other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments are increasingly favored in substance screening over traditional methods. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now often prefer hair-based testing rather than urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance workplace policies, judicial orders, and conditions of probation due to their extended tracking capabilities of up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection, and providing a secure method difficult to falsify. However, for detecting very recent substance use, urine analysis remains more accurate within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair can offer a historical perspective over a longer duration for alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When trimmed close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe extending up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification purposes. For additional tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn’t available, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome in screening requires affirmation to be accepted in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

To confirm any positive screening outcomes, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage patterns: The test can reveal a timeline of drug usage, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
