Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hereford, Pennsylvania. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair samples, our specialization lies in hair testing. We boast centers across all cities nationwide capable of carrying out hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be utilized. Our services allow for detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specially tailored testing options for hair samples.

In more recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has grown. Increasing numbers of employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts favor this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals undergoing probation rely on these tests. Hair follicle testing's main advantage is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision and extremely resistant to tampering. However, for detecting recent use within the past 5 days, traditional urine tests still hold accuracy benefits.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record of substances by ensnaring biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. Gathering hair near the scalp offers an approximately 3-month window for detecting substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferred. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a matching quantity of body hair may be sampled. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair signifies all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing protocol in the lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data input absent in the electronic custody record.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for harmful substances. Despite being cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, court admissibility requires confirmation of a positive screen. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory assessment.

If a sample signals a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced level compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Validation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The holistic process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil substance use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to bypass, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: They offer a comprehensive drug usage pattern over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair hue and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
