In Hershey, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those seeking a hair alcohol or drug test, look no further, as we excel in hair testing. Our centers cover all cities nationwide, providing professional hair testing services. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is essential from the head crown or body, enabling analysis for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent times. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for hair over urine tests. These tests serve firms with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probation-monitored individuals. The key advantage is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, collected under observation, thwarting attempts at manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent 5-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair is capable of capturing a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month time frame for alcohol and drug detection. Gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. It's advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift test for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to clear drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to stand up in court. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasted with urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating is highly improbable: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
