In Highland Park, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our experts are here to assist. We have multiple testing locations across the nation, ready to perform these analyses. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or another part of the body, to conduct the test. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific options.

The trend of utilizing hair follicle drug tests has grown significantly in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation officers often opt for hair drug testing. The primary advantage is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, along with its reliable sample collection process, which makes tampering nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, a urine test remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

An esteemed method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption is hair testing. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected from near the scalp, hair affords nearly a 3-month window for substance and alcohol detection. Hair is easy to obtain, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be secured. In terms of head hair, we relate specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The core stages in the laboratory drug test analysis are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry that is not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick check for substances of abuse. While screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be acknowledged in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening indeed require another confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase includes extracting substances from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that screen positively are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a much shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Achieving a false result in a hair test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Supports historical data: It can outline a usage pattern over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Substances become recognizable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
