Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Highspire, Pennsylvania. Whether you're looking for hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with centers across all cities Nationwide to carry out hair exams. Typically, an optimal hair sample from the crown or body is 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other tests.

Recently, hair follicle analysis has become a preferred method for drug testing. It is increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services rely on it. The main advantage is its extended 90-day detection period, in a monitored setting, offering high resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has grown to be perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by trapping biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide up to about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily shippable.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is suggested to gather 150mg of hair. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equal amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we reference only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening will necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation, if required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is extremely difficult to evade a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual rates of hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
