In Hokendauqua, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether your need is for a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been chosen for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation use hair tests due to their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust approach to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extensive history of alcohol and drug use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily adulterated, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for examination and validation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, the same quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key processes entailed in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary management of a sample in a lab’s framework. This process confirms that the sample is securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody rationale.

Screening performs an initial quick assessment for illicit substances. Although Screening provides an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a favorable screening demands verification for legal compliance. All seemingly positive cases from Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is gathered from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive instances undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair evaluations can trace drug use over a 90-day period, in contrast to urine checks with a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug assessments are difficult to manipulate, ensuring higher accuracy in outcomes.
  • Reveals drug use history: It can reveal a sequence of drug consumption across time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair shade and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
