Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analyses in Hopeland, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our numerous centers nationwide can provide these services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are adequate. Hair samples can be scrutinized for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method. More companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor it over urine tests. Organizations enforcing strict drug-free environments, legal systems, and probationary individuals benefit immensely. The tests detect substance usage over 90 days through direct observation, minimizing fraud. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine tests prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over a span of up to three months. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen encompassing about 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for preliminary screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair cannot be procured, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be sourced. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing ancillary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves an expedient assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive finding must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening phase results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests usually entail higher expenses compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
