Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hughesville, Pennsylvania. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, boasting testing centers in all cities across the nation ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, the method for performing drug tests increasingly involves hair follicle testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with stringent drug policies, legal proceedings, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is a significantly extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, using an observed collection method that's nearly impossible to deceive. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair reveals an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, fairly hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield around 100mg, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the start of sample processing into a lab system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not included in an electronic custody chain.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though it’s a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires verification to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be ostensibly positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is more complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair distinction and conforms to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days compared to the more limited window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: It's quite challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Records longitudinal data: It can outline a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
