Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Indianola, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these tests and operate testing centers across the Nation capable of conducting a hair sample analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head or other parts of the body can be used. Hair tests are applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has increased significantly. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This test method is popular with employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to its longer detection window, extending up to 90 days, and near-impossible alteration potential, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests still remain the gold standard for screening drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. If collected close to the scalp, hair analysis can detect alcohol and various drugs for up to three months. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section made up of about 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary entry of a sample into the lab system, confirming the integrity of the seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial evaluation for drug presence. It’s a cost-effective method to rule out drugs in most samples, though any positive findings need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening require second-stage confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, further hair is sourced from the initial batch for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid)—a factor that makes hair testing uniquely challenging.

Confirmation for any positive results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: They illustrate long-term drug use patterns, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests in Indianola, PA, are compelling. Hair tests offer superior detection by catching drug use over a more extended timeframe, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window, limiting historical insight. Hair testing provides greater reliability and accuracy, fundamental for employers.

Extended Detection Window

In Indianola, PA, hair follicle testing offers an expanded detection window, up to 90 days, capturing long-term substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
