Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Jacksonville, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has numerous centers in all cities across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation-bound individuals commonly utilize hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage is its extended detection span for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data on alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, deemed the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory's database. This phase includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can provide a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
