Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Jennersville, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialists at Accredited Drug Testing have expertise in hair analysis, available across all Nationwide locations. Generally, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug screening processes. Many sectors, including employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse counselors, prefer this method over traditional urine evaluations. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers utilize hair tests due to their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, minimal risk of tampering, and objective collection process. Despite this, for detection within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain their status as the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a strong method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. If taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional testing, or screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The core procedures in laboratory drug test result processing consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid drug abuse check. While economical for negating drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be viable in judicial settings. Samples with presumptively positive results necessitate further confirmation.

If screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are sourced from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex procedure to implement.

Any positive screening findings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth changes can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
