Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jermyn, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair may be used. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom solutions.

Over recent years, conducting drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over a standard urine test. These tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance for drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its prolonged drug detection period, often up to 90 days, using a witnessed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample size of 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, where a sample is integrated into the laboratory system. This process includes checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Though screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers use history: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination is limited to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Jermyn, PA? Its superior detection accuracy is unmatched, making it the preferred choice over more traditional methods. Hair tests can identify drug use patterns that evade urine tests, offering reliability where urine tests may fall short, particularly in detecting long-term substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Unlike other methods, it can identify drug use up to 90 days before testing, providing a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
