Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Joffre, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. With centers located across all cities nationwide, our expertise in hair testing ensures wide availability. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for the tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor it over standard urine testing. Hair tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers because they offer a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are almost impossible to evade. However, for detecting substance use in the most recent five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window spanning up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair, tough to tamper, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels exceeding 10 tests, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab process of obtaining a drug testing result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning stage incorporates initial processing within a laboratory setup. This encompasses checking that the sample was sealed and transported properly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to stand in court. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is done through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers longitudinal data: It offers a drug use pattern over an extended timeline, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Joffre, PA proves superior to urine testing due to its extended detection timeframe and heightened accuracy. Unlike urine tests which may only identify recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader window, capturing up to 90 days of substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
