Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Kaolin, Pennsylvania. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, our expertise includes robust hair analysis, and we have facilities throughout the nation, including all cities, to conduct these tests. Generally, you will need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair samples can be tested for substances such as drugs, ETG alcohol markers, and more specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been incorporated into drug screening regimes. A wide range of organizations, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors, now favor hair drug tests over typical urine screens. Hair-based tests are preferred by those implementing zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and individuals under probation due to their extensive detection period, typically covering up to 90 days, stringent observation during sample collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for detection of very recent substance use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the definitive standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Hair collected near the scalp can offer up to roughly a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5-inch hair, consisting of approximately 200 strands (the width akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, additional components, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's advisable to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specify scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other forms like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening economically clears most samples from drug usage suspicion, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening mandate further Confirmation.

In the event a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screenings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives get washed beforehand if required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests capture drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter periods of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is arduous, hence enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It depicts a pattern of drug use across time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test processes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
