Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Kennedy Township, Pennsylvania. For those requiring either a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing services, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Tests can determine drug or alcohol/ETG usage, as well as provide specialized options.

Recently, drug tests have increasingly used the hair follicle method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this over urine tests. This method is particularly favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation programs. Its advantage includes a detection span reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, rendering it difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands during growth. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from about 200 hairs near the scalp, comparable to a #2 pencil, gives 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additions, or examinations beyond ten panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main phases in laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, quick analysis for substance use. Though cost-efficient, Screening primarily determines drug non-usage in most samples; however, a positive result must be validated for legal acceptability. Any sample testing presumptively positive in Screening requires further confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates a presumptively positive result, an extra portion of hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS ensures Confirmation of a positive screen. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before Confirmation, if necessary. The total laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter span.
  • High accuracy: Hair drug testing is challenging to compromise, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides a historical usage pattern: It shows a timeline of drug usage, not just recent events.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become present in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
