Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Knox, Pennsylvania. For those needing a drug or alcohol evaluation using hair samples, we specialize in such tests with facilities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair is adequate. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing protocols.

Recently, hair follicle drug analysis has become a more popular method. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies and individuals under probation. Its major advantage includes a detection span of up to 90 days, with secure collection making it hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug activity, urine tests remain the gold standard within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month retrospective window for detecting drugs and alcohol. This method is straightforward to perform, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A hair specimen measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil), yields about 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For comprehensive tests, such as EtG, additional panels over 10 require 150mg. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for precision. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing drug test results encompass four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of sample processing within a laboratory system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means for negating drug use in most samples, positive results require further Confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Any samples flagged during Screening need a subsequent confirmation step.

Should the Screening phase indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at concentrations lower than those in other techniques like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. This entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes rigorous review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair testing can identify drug use up to 90 days after it occurs, surpassing the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers insights into drug use trends over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth characteristics can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these actually examine the hair strand itself, not the subscalp follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
