Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert. We have testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair samples can be examined for a variety of substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, as well as offering other customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. A hair drug test is often preferred over standard urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. For employers with strict drug policies, courts, or individuals under probation, hair follicle drug tests are ideal due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for screening recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis emerges as a formidable method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair records an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collecting hair near the scalp offers an approximate 3-month detection window for substances. Hair is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment, roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), from nearest the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, use a body hair sample of equivalent quantity. “Head hair” pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Outline

The lab processes a drug testing sample through four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially handled within a lab’s system. This procedure includes ensuring the sample’s seal and delivery are intact, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any absent data from a non-electronic chain of custody.

Screening then offers a preliminary overview for substance presence. While it is an economical method to overlook drug use in most cases, a positive finding requires validation for judicial acceptability. All samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further verification.

Presumptive positive findings in Screening lead to additional hair being taken from the primary sample for Extraction. At this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining hair drug testing’s complexity.

Validation of a positive screen result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. Every laboratory phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use within up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer window.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with hair tests poses significant difficulty, thereby enhancing result precision.
  • Shows historical substance use: Offers a timeline of drug use over a period, not merely recent intake.

Constraints:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Substances appear in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair analyses usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and individual growth patterns can impact metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing at Kutztown University, PA, the advantages of hair tests become evident. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy, capturing long-term drug use that urine tests might miss. This method offers a broader detection window, identifying substance use over several months, as opposed to the limited few days detected by urine tests.

Employers seeking robust drug screening standards find hair testing invaluable due to its precision and comprehensiveness. Unlike urine tests, which are prone to tampering and offer a shorter detection period, hair follicle tests provide dependable results over extended durations. These factors culminate in greater reliability and confidence in hair testing as a superior choice for accurate substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

Kutztown University, PA employers benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle tests, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This extensive timeframe offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, far exceeding the limited detection period provided by urine tests.

This prolonged detection capability enables employers to make well-informed decisions based on an employee's or applicant's substance history. It facilitates a thorough assessment, enhancing workplace safety and compliance. By providing a complete picture of past drug use, hair follicle testing becomes an essential tool for organizations committed to drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
