Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laceyville, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing ensures you a reliable experience, with facilities located nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair testing over conventional urine screens. Hair follicle tests appeal to those enforcing strict drug policies or monitoring probation. The extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, coupled with the observed sample collection process, minimizes the chances of tampering. Nonetheless, for recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective tool to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to adulterate, and simple to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, a similar amount of body hair might be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The significant steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It showcases a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine tests in Laceyville, PA? The major advantage lies in the detection accuracy and reliability of hair testing. Unlike more conventional urine tests, hair analysis can reveal a substance use history extending back 90 days. This extended window provides a more comprehensive overview of an individual's drug habits.

Employers and individuals in Laceyville can take advantage of the superior detection capabilities of hair testing. The comprehensive nature of these tests makes them an excellent choice over traditional urine testing, ensuring drug policies are effectively enforced.

Extended Detection Window

In Laceyville, PA, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that catches drug use up to 90 days prior. This feature is invaluable for employers seeking a deeper insight into an individual's substance use history. It surpasses the limitations of other tests, providing a fuller picture of an employee or applicant's lifestyle choices.

The broad detection range of hair testing serves as a reliable tool in assessing past drug use. This offers assurance to employers that they are making informed decisions based on thorough and accurate data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
