Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Landingville, Pennsylvania. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair evaluations, offering facilities in every city nationwide equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, there has been a shift towards hair follicle drug evaluations for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over conventional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with no-tolerance drug policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation. The main advantage includes an extended detection timeline up to 90 days, conducted through a monitored collection, and challenging to falsify. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent 5-day drug detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair collects a long-lasting record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for assessment and confirmation testing. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. The term 'head hair' strictly denotes scalp hair. 'Body hair' includes all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing leading to a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of entering a sample into a lab’s workflow. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and sent properly, giving it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody isn't used.

Screening serves as a quick preliminary assessment for drugs. While it's economically efficient for eliminating drug presence in most cases, a positive screening must be verified for legal admissibility. All samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

A sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening will have more hair taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to undertake.

The verification of positive Screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage patterns: Delivers insights into prolonged drug use, not merely recent events.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug analyses are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Landingville, PA: Hair tests provide superior detection that significantly overshadows traditional urine testing. Accuracy and reliability are enhanced, offering results not easily influenced by common methods of tampering, thus rendering hair follicle testing the better option.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
