Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lansford, Pennsylvania. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across all US cities capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Many businesses, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now mandate hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is their extended detection window up to 90 days, and they are collected under observation, making them hard to manipulate. For detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests still remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended retrospective analysis of alcohol and drug use by ensnaring biomarkers in the growing hair's fibers. When extracted from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest assessing the weight of the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s framework. It involves verifying the sample's sealed condition and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any necessary additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial cursory assessment for illicit substances. While Screening provides a cost-effective strategy to rule out drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be confirmed for judicial admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Upon a sample returning a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests provide drug use detection up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a shorter time frame.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is remarkably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over extended periods, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
