Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Larimer, Pennsylvania. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing, along with our nationwide testing centers, ensures accessibility for everyone. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required for testing, and analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent in drug screening methods. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are especially useful for organizations with strict no-drug policies and for probation evaluations. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is that it provides a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, cannot be easily tampered with, and provides accurate results despite urine tests being better suited for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering with it is relatively challenging, and it's convenient to transport.

To obtain an ideal sample for analysis, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp should be collected, equaling 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair are exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the system incorporates the incoming sample, checks proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any necessary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial drug abuse check. This cost-efficient approach helps preclude drug use in most samples, but a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples identified as potentially positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

For a sample labeled presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drug elements are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Supplies historical patterns: It delivers a usage history over time, rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," this analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
