Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Laurelton, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities throughout the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. We can analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other custom testing requirements.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle screening more often. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now require hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screening serves employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. Notably, it provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days and involves a strictly observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, if the goal is to detect drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use, as biomarkers are ensnared within the strands of developing hair. When sourced close to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to three months. The procedure for collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and corroboration. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is best to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Notably, "head hair" implies scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to any other forms of hair (be it facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in laboratory processing of a drug testing sample, these are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial entry into the laboratory's systems. This step ensures the sample's integrity by confirming it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional details not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial and swift evaluation for drug traces. While it is a cost-effective method to initially identify potential drug usage, any positive findings must be validated through Confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

Should a sample return a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hairs are retrieved from the existing sample for the Extraction process. This involves extracting drug traces from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is achieved via methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug presence up to 90 days, contrasted with the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is nearly impossible, ensuring accuracy in results.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a trend of drug intake over time rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing costs more than other modalities.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can sway drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", it actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
