Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug examinations available in Lawrence, Pennsylvania. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you're after, our specialty is in hair testing and we provide locations in every city across the nation for conducting hair tests. Required hair length is typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body, adequately used in most cases. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing analyses.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has leaned more towards hair follicle assessments. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine analysis. This method is chosen by workplaces with strict drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. Key advantages of hair follicle tests include an extended drug-use detection window, usually reaching up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making it incredibly hard to tamper with. However, when testing for substance use within the past five days, urine exams remain the most exact approach.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. It offers a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug usage by preserving biomarkers within the strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair testing can detect alcohol and drugs for a period of up to three months. Hair collection is easy to perform, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for initial testing and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome consist of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information not captured by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although cost-effective, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Samples that show a positive result in Screening need further verification.

For samples testing positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the collected sample and prepped for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive results is done with techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleaned as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter time frames.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers insights into drug usage patterns spanning over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to have higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and growth rate variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
