Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lebanon South, Pennsylvania. When you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, they are experts in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing services.

In recent times, the trend has shifted towards using hair follicle tests more frequently for drug screenings. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine samples. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs. The key advantage is the longer detection period of drug use, up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means to detect the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive historical record of substance intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month retrospective window for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, quick evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective methodology for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples that present as presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a narrower window of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal patterns of substance use over an extended time frame, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: It generally takes around 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Lebanon South, PA, hair testing emerges superior in accuracy and reliability. The benefits of hair testing over urine testing lie in a longer drug detection window and the reduced likelihood of sample tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
