Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Lemont Furnace, PA. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with locations nationwide capable of hair testing. A sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair analysis options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over routine urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. The primary advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, with a supervised collection, making it tough to cheat. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary check for prohibited substances. Although Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive test requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives undergo a cleaning process before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter duration.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reflect a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally bear a higher cost than other testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
