In Lenape, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with facilities nationwide ready for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom testing choices.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained importance recently, often replacing traditional methods. Employers adopting zero-tolerance drug rules, courts, and probation officers prefer this testing method over urine tests. The significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection capability, revealing drug use for up to 90 days. Collection is supervised, making tampering difficult. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a history of alcohol and drugs over time by embedding biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to 90 days for substances like alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness), will provide 100mg, the preferred quantity for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, supplementary checks, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other sorts of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicating a potential positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening results in a tentative positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most intricate approach to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards as well as ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can discern drug use up to 90 days, outperforming the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has several advantages over urine testing in Lenape, PA. The longer detection window provided by hair samples allows for the identification of substance use over a more extended period. This makes it the best choice for employers, courts, and rehab centers prioritizing accuracy. Reliable and resistant to tampering, hair follicle testing offers undeniable advantages.

Compared to urine tests, hair samples provide higher detection accuracy due to their ability to retain traces for a long time. This makes hair testing an ideal option for comprehensive assessments, ensuring no recent substance use goes unnoticed.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Lenape, PA, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which reaches up to 90 days. This broad timeframe allows for a comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance use history. Employers seeking to maintain a drug-free environment rely on this robust feature to make informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
