Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Level Green, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with centers across cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed for the test. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly common method in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. For substance use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it is possible to detect substances for up to approximately 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result consist of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering the sample into the laboratory’s system, confirming it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives found in Screening need a second confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical patterns: It provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suited for recent detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Level Green, PA, by delivering unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Greater detection window makes hair tests ideal for identifying long-term drug use patterns.
Unlike traditional urine tests, hair samples provide a 90-day detection period, offering extensive insight into an individual's substance history, beneficial for employers with stringent anti-drug policies.

While both testing methods serve their purpose, hair testing in Level Green provides a more comprehensive overview of substance use. The ability to detect substances for up to 90 days significantly enhances workplace safety and ensures strict adherence to zero-tolerance policies. The proven advantage makes hair testing a preferred choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
